Cards

Purpose and Description

The cards lesson is a form of digital flashcards. Each 2-sided card can have text, photo, video, and/or audio content on both sides. The cards can be presented in an order, random order, in "flipped", where the responses are flipped to appear first.

This lesson type can be used for preparing for quizzes, self-quizzing, digital storytelling, paired learning activities, and presentations that incorporate student digital media content. The multi-modal features support Universal Design for Learning principles as well as differentiated instruction.

How it works: Play Mode

Image

After opening a previously loaded Cards lesson, cards will appear in a grid formation. Tapping on a card flips it over, and if audio was set up for the card, the sound will play when the card is revealed. Tap on the card again to return it to the original position. The grid of cards can be moved by dragging the background and using a pinch and expand motion to zooming in or out. Students can explore educational content and review correct responses by activating the “Hide/Reveal” button from the side menu, activated by the corner menu item, described below.

Some lessons have a YouTube video linked to it and can show up at the beginning of the lesson. The video can be dismissed by pressing the X in the top right corner, or by pressing any key on the keyboard.

How to build

Manage Content

The Manage Content Screen opens upon selecting the lesson type, where content for the lesson can be set. Below is an example from a previously created lesson.

Image

Type in the title of the lesson in the textbox located at the top left-hand side of the screen.

In the Manage Content screen there are two columns. The one on the left represents images, video, or text that appears on the front side of the cards. The column on the right represents the content that appears on the back of the card.

Tap the Create Content button to add each content bar needed for the lesson. Within each content bar, Items can be set to display as text-only, image only, or text + image/video for this lesson type. Audio can be added to the front and to the back of each card.

Enter the text for each item, and then select the Background button located on the right side of each column to activate a file browser. Drag the text items to rearrange the position and place it under a group.

From this browser, you can select images or video from your computer, or enter a search term and select images from the Internet. The Sound button will open a similar file browser, where you can search for audio files from your hard drive.

It is also possible to create groups. Each group works as a game round with it's own set of content. The textbox on the top of the group allows you to set a text to be displayed at the screen when playing that round.

Preview Screen

The Preview Screen, located in the top right of the interface, will display the current state of the lesson as you update your work. After you are done making the lesson, the Preview screen provides a way to play the lesson and check if any changes are needed.

In the Text section, located beneath the Preview Screen you can select the font, font size, font color, and font shadow.

In the Background section you can choose a background for your lesson. Under Theme you can choose a Snowflake theme from a drop-down menu. Under Background you can use the orange button to open a file browser and select an image from your hard drive or the internet.

In the Gameplay section under Rules you can choose Ordered, which is the default setting, to have the cards appear in the order they appear. Randomized places them in a random order. The Flipped rule works the same as Ordered, except all the cards are already flipped by default. You can also activate and set a timer.

To interact with the lesson in full-screen mode, press Play.
